Thursday 13th July 2017 - Day 1 (Mentor Training)

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Alhamdulillah the mentors have all arrived in the Holy City of Qom, eager to begin their mentor training! We opened with a Qur'an reflection by the facilitator, Br Qasim, on Surah Naba' (34) verses 36 to 39 that underpinned aspects of finding the core of your purpose and deep-rooted aims in life as well as discovering or furthering one's own spirituality. For mentors, this is of particular significance as a result of one of our several roles in facilitating an environment where we are a means by which the participants will gain the maximum possible benefits of the course, as well as to further our own skill sets and development.

Then we initiated with icebreaker introductions in order to form a bond between the different mentors, which was very quickly established- particularly due to many of us already knowing each other. This was followed by laying the foundations of what is expected of the role of mentorship, thus leading to exploring our own expectations and perceived outcomes of the course, as well as discussing previous experiences as participants. We also briefly touched upon leadership qualities and active listening- both of which shall be expanded upon of the next few days.

Thereafter following lunch, Sheikh Khalfan gave a talk on Mentoring in Light of The Qur'an and from Hadith, where he emphasised on our particular aspect of tazkiyya (spiritual purification) as mentors to aid the participants in purifying their nafs, in addition to being a suhba (companion) to them. We analysed the various methodologies of learning, capacities and the receptivity of individuals that was delivered in a framework of examining 8 Qualities of a mentor that can support and encourage participants, combined with 7 Strategies by which we may manoeuvre ourselves. Furthermore, this was consolidated by exploring the 5 M's (self-conditioning, self-vigilance, self-accounting, self-reprimanding and self-punishment) by which a mentor can improve their own selves.

The final segment of the day focused on an aspect that is always very exciting to discover for individuals, which is the MBTI personality tests. This allowed us as Mentors to discover how we energise (I vs E); how we process information (N vs S); how we make decisions (F vs T) and how we prefer to live our lives (P vs J) respectively - all of these enable us to uncover our personal strengths and weaknesses by which we can thereafter strategize to achieve the best conduct and outcomes with our participants.

Friday 14th July 2017 - Day 2 (Mentor Training)

Alhamdulillah today we had a very busy and the most enjoyable day. We were able to continue with our mentoring session which kicked off yesterday. We discussed so many items including Quran reflection presented by sister Sajidah and she touched on Surah 11: 22. Alhamdulillah, it was awesome to see that Quran is touching our lives directly.

After that, we had a mentor circle where we were sharing the insights we got from the previous lectures and how it is going to affect our roles as mentors. We then headed to today's lecture which touched on skills that mentors use to serve the mentees perfectly. The lecture was really wonderful I can as well swear that I have never been into such a lecture. Of course, we had presentations where all of us participated and we had different scenarios to act in.

Our day ended by taking supper at Spaghetti house accompanied by Shaykh Nadir and Agha Mustafa.

After that, we went to visit our beloved lady Fatima Ma'sooma (sa), Alhamdulillah.
